Waterfall Resort In Alaska Celebrates Local History By Raising Honorary Totem Poles

Ketchikan, Alaska (IPRWIRE) Mon, Feb. 19th, 2007 -- In honor of its 25th anniversary this spring, Waterfall Resort in Southeast Alaska (www.waterfallresort.com/inm.html) will raise two totem poles carved by the grandson of a Haida chief who presented a totem pole to the Waterfall Cannery in 1937. In a unique tribute to Waterfall Resort’s historic ties to the Native Alaskan community, the Resort has commissioned the totem poles from Lee Wallace, who recently began carving the poles in Saxman Village, just south of Ketchikan, Alaska.

Waterfall Resort, now a nationally recognized sport fishing resort, was home to one of the most productive salmon canneries in the early 1900s. Lee Wallace’s grandfather, John Dewey Wallace, lived in a Haida community near Waterfall and presented a 35-foot totem pole to the cannery superintendent 70 years ago. At that time, most of the fish sold to the cannery came from Native Alaskan fishermen from Hydaburg, Craig, Klawock, Metlakatla, and Ketchikan.

That totem pole stood next to the cannery’s general store for many decades, until it mysteriously disappeared. The totem pole eventually was found in two pieces in Seattle, and a philanthropic group refurbished it and raised it adjacent to the Montlake Cut in Seattle, near the University of Washington.

Lee Wallace decided to interpret his grandfather’s “Story of North Island” in two totems, the eagle and the master carpenter. Photo updates of the carving process will be posted at www.waterfallresort.com/totems.html.

Waterfall Resort also announces that it will open for its 25th season on May 26th, 2007. The 2,300 guests that visit the resort each summer stay in remodeled historic buildings that housed cannery workers nearly 100 years ago. Fishing guides take guests to some of the regions most productive sport fishing locations, where Native Alaskan fishermen have trolled for generations.

Waterfall Resorts Now Has Alaska Airlines Representative Available to Assist with Alaska Vacation Travel Arrangements on Return Flights Home

Ketchikan, AK (IPR Wire) June 23, 2006 -- Traveling home after your vacation at an Alaska Waterfall Resort just got easier. Now Waterfall Resorts has an Alaska Airlines representative on site to help guests with their travel arrangements back home. The following procedures can now be completed before arrival at the Ketchikan airport:

• Confirmation of your flight departure.
• Seat assignment.
• Tagging luggage properly.
• Tagging fish boxes properly.

Guests save time and avoid frustration when the above procedures are taken care of before they arrive at the airport. Waterfall Resorts wants to help their guests enjoy a stress-free close to their vacation, and this extra step means everyone can enjoy the trip home.

Ford Motors of Southern California recently sent 80 corporate guests on vacation in Alaska with over 150 pieces of luggage and 160 boxes of fish on the return flight home. The conclusion of the trip was successful because of the excellent service provided by the Alaska Airlines representative at the resort. Airport wait times were reduced and the 80 guests were confident that their luggage and fish boxes were handled fast and efficiently because claim checks were provided ahead of time.

This unique check-in service at Waterfall Resort is approved by the FAA. Guests at the lodge avoid the frustration and timely waits that are common when traveling long distances, and the response to this service has been overwhelmingly positive.
